The Temperance Toolbox

Disclaimer

What this site can help with, and where its limits are.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking about ending your life, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, United States) or call 911. More options are on the Crisis Resources page.

This is education, not treatment

The Temperance Toolbox provides tools and information for personal growth, organization, emotional regulation, and practical life skills. It is not a substitute for professional mental health, medical, legal, or financial advice, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind.

No tool here diagnoses anything. Assessments and checklists are structured reflection exercises. A result is a prompt for thought, not a clinical finding, and it says nothing definitive about whether you have a condition.

When to talk to a professional

Self-directed tools work well for ordinary difficulty. They are not enough on their own when symptoms are severe, persistent, or getting worse, when they are interfering with your work, relationships, or ability to care for yourself, or when you are thinking about harming yourself or anyone else.

The guide on when to seek professional help walks through specific signs. The therapy directory lists low-cost and sliding-scale options if cost is the obstacle.

If you are already in treatment, keep using it. Nothing on this site is a reason to stop a medication, leave therapy, or change a treatment plan. Talk to the professional treating you before changing anything.

Psychological material

The behavioral and psychological content draws on established approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. It is written for general education and simplifies material that is more complicated in practice. Techniques that help many people will not help everyone, and a few can be uncomfortable for someone working through trauma. Stop and consult a professional if an exercise here makes things worse.

Scripture on this site

Scripture quotations are from the New King James Version, given with the reference and set apart visually from commentary, so you can tell where the text ends and our words begin. Italics inside a quotation mark words the translators supplied for the sake of English grammar; they are not emphasis. In places a passage is cited by reference rather than quoted, so that you can look it up and read it in its own context.

Commentary and application on this site are our own. They are offered as one believer's reading, and they carry no authority of their own. Test them against the text. Where a passage is doing something different from what a tool needs it to do, the honest thing is to leave the passage alone, and that is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Scripture is the foundation of this project rather than an ornament on it. That said, biblical principles are not a treatment for illness, and this site does not present them as one. A person can be walking faithfully and still need a doctor.

Financial and legal material

The money tools, benefit program listings, and legal resource directories are general information. Eligibility rules, filing deadlines, dollar limits, and procedures vary by state and change often. Verify anything you are relying on with the agency itself, or with an attorney or financial professional, before acting on it.

Directories and outside links

Organizations listed here are included because they appeared relevant. Inclusion is not a recommendation or a guarantee of quality, availability, or fitness for your situation, and no organization has paid to appear. Phone numbers and program details change without notice. Confirm details directly, especially in an urgent situation.
